This is a loosely woven novel, threading together a mildly compelling whodunit with an unabashed exhumation of Jane Austen's most beloved cast. With the murder occurring a solid fifth of the way in and being largely resolved before the final fifth, Ms James makes only a half-hearted attempt to convince us that the mystery was ever more than an excuse for her to take a wander through Pemberly and spend time conversing with characters dear to her. Fortunately she treats both the landscape and its inhabitants with grace and care, and it is easy to forgive Ms James her indulgence.
