I could not put this book down, but at the same time, it really disturbed me. Like so many others, before I read this book I did not know about the Vel' d'Hiv' roundup in France in July 1942 - it was the FRENCH police who made the arrests and treated the people so deplorably before sending them to Auschwitz, not the Germans - and just as disturbing was the indifference for so long afterwards. The fictional characters and storyline that the author used to impress upon us the tragic truth of these events were vivid, engaging, and very effective.

"Zakhor, Al Tichkah" ("Remember, Never Forget.")
