Read in December, 2011, read count: 1

The first in a trilogy, this fantasy novel introduces a new-to-me creature in the genre: the griffin. The main character is a shy 15-year-old human farm girl named Kes, who gets drawn into the the griffin civilization and quickly into a griffin-human war for survival, after a griffin mage recognizes in her an innate, undeveloped ability to become a mage herself. He twists that potential to make her a fire mage, despite all the changes that will make in her life and even in her very nature. There are several POV characters, a necessary narrative device when telling a saga like this. I love reading stories told from mulitple POV when it's done well, and Neumeier does it very well. I have books 2 and 3 on the shelf and am looking forward to reading them soon!
