Part 1 of this novel vastly outshines the rest. The rest of the book is written more like a list of events (amazing and tragic adventures but events) tied together by his try-too-hard philosophy. The novel could have been about 300 fewer pages with a more cohesive plot. The book is still worth reading for all of the adventure and some of the lovely characters (Prabhaker & Didier to name a few). An entire novel could have been devoted to his time in the slum. The richest characters lived in that slum where his best adventures happened. And I was going to throw the book out of the moving car if he described Karla's eyes one more time....
