bookshelves: american-literature, noir

I've always avoided Library of America editions because they're so into being definitive that the heavy books and cramped pages aren't much fun to read. I expected a thorough introduction to back up the prestige edition, but there isn't one, just a variorum list, biographical chronology and some notes on the text. I had known that Hammett was a Pinkerton and wasn't surprised to learn that he had worked in that respect as a strikebreaker on at least one occasion, but I hadn't know that later in life he was a Community Part USA organizer and almost went to prison for it.
