This young adult romance from Lauren Barnholdt grew on me, even though its main characters initially seemed alarmingly shallow. Hannah’s boyfriend cheats on her in front of everyone at a party on the last day of junior year in high school. Then, to make matters worse, her best friend, Ava, unexpectedly leaves town for the summer. Ava urges her own boyfriend, Noah, to look out for Hannah, and he helps her get a job at the diner where he works. Emerging from her depression, Hannah finds herself falling in love with Noah in spite of her best efforts not to betray Ava’s trust. Although the events are fairly predictable and heavily foreshadowed, the narrative builds suspense by shifting chapter by chapter between summer events and the first day of senior year, when Hannah must face the consequences of her actions. Hannah’s voice as the first person narrator is honest and believable, engaging the reader in the lessons she learns about friendship and love. Contemporary cultural references situate the story firmly in the present moment. There is mention of casual sex as well as of drug and alcohol use, and the text includes some swear words (including the F word).
