I think this is a great prequel. It provides backstory for Penny, Moist, Johnnie Snow and Dr. Horrible as well as a hilarious public service message from Captain Hammer, mostly about himself. It's a good set up for the movie and does the medium crossover well. Also, I recommend reading the introduction.
