A balanced, well-researched and compulsively readable overview of the great English novelist's life. While at times it was possibly a little dry (often hard to avoid with biographies), I found it offered an extremely interesting portrait of an enigmatic man capable of great good, yet at times prone to acting akin to his most ruthless antagonists. It left me with a strong desire to reread some of Dicken's works. I still think the man himself was a bit of a puzzle, but undeniably an interesting one.
