Following on The Lobster Chronicles, All Fishermen Are Liars, and Recipes from a Very Small Island (an absolutely wonderful cookbook written with her mother), Linda Greenlaw ventures into fiction with what hopefully is the first in a series of mysteries featuring Jane Bunker, former Dade County, FL, detective who seeks to destress and simplify her life by becoming an investigator for a maritime insurance company.
While the writing was a bit choppy and uneven in spots, I was drawn in by the cast of local town characters and look forward to seeing them reappear in the next book in the series or a sequel. In the midst of the unique locals of Green Haven, ME, Jane seems a bit Plum-esque as she gets herself into some interesting predicaments when trying to solve the mystery of how the body of local fisherman Nick Dow washes ashore with a crushed skull.
A good first mystery with enough loose ends to have me looking for to another trip Down East.
