Magyk is a good book for older elementary school children and young teens. I think an older teen would be able to spot the few plot-holes and the predictable storyline. I also think they would be put off by the disproportionate amount of time spent on secondary characters which makes this book as thick as it is. It doesn't help that the main characters are a bit thin and one-dimensional.

However, it's a fun ride. Even though you know all the plot twists that are coming, the descriptions are so vivid, the world is so interesting and the writing is so pleasant that you don't care. In fact, I was eager to find out if what I thought was true, really was true. (It was.) And even though the main characters aren't as fully fleshed out as they should be, I cared about what happened to them.

I won't continue reading this series as I'm obviously not in the targeted audience. That said, I will definitely recommend this to any young girls or boys I know.
