This is the second book in history I have ever considered reading twice, voluntarily.

I don't think I have higher praise.

Harry Dresden is the only, openly practicing wizard in Chicago. He's in the phone book under 'wizards.' He's a private investigator who teams up with Chicago's finest when things get a bit hairy.

But that isn't the point of the book or even the series. Harry is a lonely, powerful, angry, sarcastic guy trying to do right in the world. He has a lot of issues and even more enemies. Nothing is ever easy and he is always getting his ass kicked.

Luckily, he has a few good friends too. (That, a crapload of power and just enough smarts to get out of the situations he inevitably gets himself into.)

Like Harry Potter, the series gets more complex and a lot more interesting as time goes by. The later books are decidedly better than the earlier ones, but since it builds, its good to read them in sequence.

But i found this one to be the most compelling...more
