The fun of a golden age western pulp fiction story is in full force here. The characters are fun to read, if a bit forced in a few places. The story wraps up nicely (Sanderson still has his knack for ending a tale) but the whole thing feels rushed in many places. Had this been the first of a trilogy like The Final Empire I think the characters could have been given more breathing room and some of the mysteries could have been allowed to develop.

But in the spirit of a pulp fiction tale, it works. The Mist Born universe is a rare treat, and I look forward to the next full length trilogy Sanderson has in mind!
