Enough good cannot be said of the great poet, Jack Gilbert. I am glad he has a "Collected" body of work out now. It is fitting for such a talented and steadfast man as he. It is my sincere hope that he can win with this book a Pulitzer Prize, that is, if they still give those prizes out for excellence and long-accomplishment. Wallace Stevens comes to mind.

Tom Wallace Stevens? Not even close. Compare and contrast: "My life is pleasant, as usual. My body is a blessing/ and my spirit clear. But the waiting does not let up." And (selected almost at random) "But what are radiant reason and radiant will/ To warblings early in the hilarious trees/ Of summer, the drunken mother?" Who uses I? asks the Poet. Not I.

M. Sarki Tom,
My comment was directly pointed at the prize committee finally deciding Stevens at the ripe old age of seventy-five deserved a Pulitzer Prize. I am wishing the same respect for Jack Gilbert as there is nobody, n-o-b-o-d-y, even close to him today. In no way was I comparing their poems. Wallace Stevens is GOD.

Tom I misunderstood. Stevens overlooked for the Nobel too. I don't think the Swedes read English well, their choices for Nobels in the language are often so odd. I don't know Gilbert. I've ordered this book.
