What appeal does this book have? Great plot, well drawn-out and three-dimensional characters, intentional and believable conflict, good foreshadowing, surprise plot twists. With all of that, why did I give it only three stars? Well, that's actually a good grade for a novel. The dialogue is tedious in both its repetitive nature and its vocabulary. Do teens, even in the early eighties, talk like that? I don't think they do, at least not to that extent. As one reviewer described this book, "it's like "Stand by Me" on steroids. I would go even further and say it's "The Outsiders" on crystal meth. This is not for the faint of heart, but it might be for those who want the kind of book you can't put down once you start.
