First, I must say that John Sandford is probably my favorite author. I have read every book he's written, many of them twice. His Prey novels, with Lucas Davenport, are eagerly awaited each year. When he started up the Virgil Flowers character I wanted to like him as much as Lucas, but couldn't. The first few books were good, though. Not as good as the Prey novels, but better than most. This last offering was not.

I almost put it down several times. I couldn't get invested in the case, the killer, or in Virgil. Nothing clicked. I found myself skimming, which I almost never do in Sandford books. I hope the next one is better.
