This story rests on a premise that is hard to swallow. Det. Cassie Maddox (from In the Woods) is so identical to a murder victim that she is able to go undercover, slip into her life, and live in the same house as the dead girl's best friends and fool them into thinking that the girl survived. But once you suspend your disbelief, this is a phenomenal, wonderfully written novel. The sense of otherworldliness of In the Woods is here as well, but not as heavy. The characters are fascinating, and the girl's death is poignant. Reviewers have compared this to Donna Tartt's Secret History. There are obvious similarities, but this book is way better than Tartt's pretentious novel.
