Blimey O'Reilly. China Miéville is bloody brilliant. This book is frighteningly realistic, clever, funny, terrifying, stomach-churning, shocking and heart-squeezingly beautiful.

Love every character. Good and bad they almost walk from the pages, covered in grime and blood.

Mr Miéville says that Mervyn Peake was a huge influence and it's not hard to see shades of my beloved Gormenghast in the shadows of Perdido Street Station. But Miéville has a way of weaving a tale that is entirely his own.

A brilliant, harrowing horror of a read peppered with hope and humanity. Loved it.
