A good cry is so cathartic, no? This book sure did it to me ... cancer, small children, love, affairs, academe, The List of Things That No Longer Matter, the "heart wants what it wants" and so on.
However, the author portrays the "mother" in the worst possible way, or at best the least flattering way, leading one to suppose latent unaddressed issues that are definitely Electra in nature. Yes the author knows how to raise magnificent children ... but her mother did not in her own turn? Is this the first time in world history someone raised good children and knew how to live in the midst of complex life issues?
