I enjoyed it a lot from a girl-power standpoint; I thought that August was a very strong character, a woman that has that uniquely female power to just give love freely. She reminded me of Pilate from Song of Solomon. But that, in turn, made me consider The Secret Life of Bees as a whole against Song of Solomon as a whole, and there's really no comparison. Obviously they're different books trying to do different things, but the thought did cause me to give this book three stars instead of four. I enjoyed reading it, I appreciate the story, I particularly liked the way that the characters were drawn and the little romance, but there are points at which I don't think the prose quite holds up. Some of the more figurative paragraphs worked quite well, and some of them sounded like, well, a fourteen-year-old girl writing in a journal.
