This book gave me the shivers of the sterile, controlled life that people were living. It also made me sad that their world was devoid of all color and uniqueness that make our lives so interesting. True, there was apparently no pain, violence, poverty, hunger, illness. While I wish there was much less of that, one wonders if the price is all or nothing. I found the ending to be optimistic that there would be a better world after all. I just hope we don't have to descend into The Giver's world before we appreciate what we have. Lowry's writing and telling of the story was excellent. It is a book for all ages.
