I was very disappointed with this book. I usually love the WW2 setting in Malta and the horrendous hardships they endured. Unfortunately the main character Lila was a rather uninteresting and not particularly likeable one.

If I hadn't already read a lot about Malta, its turbulent times and the hardships endured when the Germans & Italians bombed them so savagely and shut them off from the convoys supplying them with food, I might have enjoyed it it more.

A much better read is The Information Officer by Mark Mills with characters that are much more interesting, an exciting plot & a wonderful portrayal of the hardships of life on Malta during WW2.
