Lovely: that's how I would describe this book. The writing, so deceptively simple, is lovely. One review described it as "shimmering," and I would agree. The prose has a lovely, un-ironic lilt to it, and practically glides off the page, though is not without witty turns of phrase.

The story is, more or less, classic fantasy, though not quite (more flawed characters, more self-aware). It's also peppered with hilarious interludes. (One particular conversation between a blue jay and his wife-with-moral-high-ground springs to mind. As does the incident where the tree falls in love with Schmendrick the Magician, who has to excuse himself by saying he is engaged to another tree.)

Although I very much enjoyed reading the book, I also felt somewhat distant from the characters, and thus not as invested as I've been in other books (hence 4/5 stars). Nevertheless, still a good read, if only for the lovely writing.
