Basic Writings of Existentialism
by Gordon Daniel Marino
by Gordon Daniel Marino
My university career started off with the reading of Sartre's Existentialism. It reinforced some of the views I held but then also made more sense. I can't forget Sartre. SUBJECTIVITY. Everything is subjective! There is a definite gray area in ethics, nothing is black and white. Man doesn't choose evil... it's what he thinks is right at that point in his life. What I want may not be what you want, so how can you tell me I'm wrong if you're not me?
We also read Unamuno's Saint Manuel Bueno, Marytr, and I was enthralled the whole way through. Why do people believe they are sinners? We need not hate ourselves and call ourselves sinners... our only sin was that we were born. We are here now, and what can we do? Live our lives. How? In the way we choose.

Here is what you said: "Everything is subjective! There is a definite gray area in ethics, nothing is black and white. Man doesn't choose evil... it's what he thinks is right at that point in his life. What I want may not be what you want, so how can you tell me I'm wrong if you're not me?" I am just trying to explore or be consistent with what you said. Based on your statement of what is ethical, how is what I said incorrect? (BTW, calling people names is not a an argument!)
That may or may not be wrong to you, but you don't know what I think is wrong or right, just like I don't know what you think is wrong or right. Obviously, I wouldn't give you a pass. Ethics is not black and white, and nothing can help us decide. That was my point.
In many war-fronts in Africa soldiers were forcced to engage in raping other women.. In a few occasions they were carriers of HIV & even more so they were told to do that, so they cuold help in a way, in ethnic cleansing...In my side of the borders , on the War in Yugoslavian. A vast amount of women was raped in series by soldiers that didnt made it to their 20s some were only 17 or maybe less.. In both occasion (victim & assialant) many open wounds were left for proff's to uncover and try to mend in the needs of a society not ready to accept them..
What troubles me the most is that on an occaiosn where 7 soldiers att'ked a woman only 1 was feeling disgust on his"duty" an was subsequently loathed or scolded by the rest. Why was it so? Well cause the rest were thinking that this was on their line of dty a repriece, a chance to get out ..in his occasion War & orders didnt shift his poistion.. But well most ppl tend to "shift" regarding the environment & occasions they leave at. Perhaps that's what Satre is trying to prove there.. Sam "morality check" stands true for the Vatican among other churches.. Look it up...
--Stil I know I am not good in dealing with Satre. just pointing out the obvious---
How ppl tend to shift the lines on what is good & acceptable in regards to what is prohibeted & loathsome. Good or Bad is only a disposition in our minds ppl guiding us ( not from above) are able to guide as to where it's needed...

Anyway I wanted to say that these "lengthy responce" was made possible through a film ( star Tim robbins) on another "white night" of mine..From that film I learned much more on what is happening to victims of war later on.. there is a union for rehabilitating them...
But for what is worth I do hope that I helped out in yr argument ( Was it on the line of Satre's line of thought???)
I saw Nietzsche in the last two sentences of your comment, how good and bad is just a fabrication. But I do think Sartre touches on those themes when he puts emphasis on individual choice and responsibility for not just oneself, but others as well. Thanks for your comment!
I am currently involved with Nietzche.. but too lazy to finish up another book..Also Barry is pointin out the obcious asking Ya such stuff in such a straughtforward manner
He read Erich Fromm... hhm wonder how did he get such attitude, that's the usual responce U get from a :zombie person" they alwayz switch to teh HEre & NOw, me against the rest type of argument.
I tend to see things more spherically. But mind Ya Cari,,there;s a heavy toll on everyone of us seperately, and U are goin to be on aplce where U can make things happen, foor yrself or for others. Usually U are bred to conform and actually make no choise ( just like in an army state's of conformists)
Be what U are expected to . But if U can fight the urge to behave"rationally" or "logically" along the path of others.. Then U might be expected to pay for that diversion, some time later on.
In my case on the army.. need I say any more...
God is dead---> We make our own choises in achaotic Universe neither predetermined nor pre-ordered.
