Empress's review
joe brainard is wayyyy more likeable than henry miller. (however, i always did like big sur and hieronymus bosch.)
shhhhh my goodness don't ask things like that in comments!
You know....it's Red Hill Red.
Will keep an eye out for Joe for ya.
Gallery 16 just did a big deal with Bill Berkson so there should be some stuff floating around.
i remember is worth at least 4 stars. it definitely slows down after a while, but still...why didn't i think of that idea?
True, very true...And I struggled in deciding whether to give it 3 or 4 stars. I am a big fan of Joe's other writing, but this one did slow down for me too much at the end. Perhaps it's the type of book you should just pick up every now and again and see which page you turn to, rather then read it straight through.
And yes, "why didn't I think of that?"
--In part of my review I was going to include Ron Padgett's reflections:
"...as soon as Joe Brainard showed the initial version to his friends and read it in public, everyone saw that he had made a marvelous discovery, and many of us wondered why we hadn't thought of such an obvious idea ourselves..."
"...The beauty of it all is taht Joe made it look so easy. And in some ways it is. Few people can read this book and not feel like grabbing a pencil to start writing their own parallel versions."
You're right, maybe I should give it four...Hmmm.
Well, my full review is yet to come. :)
