A president lies in the White House, suffering mightily from an assassination attempt that has lodged a bullet in his body. But it would not be the bullet that ends his life, rather it is the "help" of his doctors. In an age at the cusp of adopting antiseptics as proposed by Dr. Lister, a simple, but serious wound, is made much worse through the unsanitary practices of his doctors, digging in with fingers and instruments trying to find the bullet lodged somewhere in his torso. Egos, vanity, and changing technology collide in this story of the second president to be assassinated in office, a mere 16 years after the death of Abraham Lincoln. A fascinating read.
