Lately, I've been on an otherworld-fiction kick (Good Omens, The Gates, The Infernals), and what I find so amusing about stories that involve saints and demons-- and, by extension, heaven and hell-- is that these entities are usually portrayed as having human emotions and attitudes: the saints are bored from being all good all the time, and the demons are obsequious minions who are always aware of their tenuous positions of power, wherever they may fall along the totem pole in hell. It's a frame of reference that is comically oversimplified, but that is why it makes for a good story, which is exactly what this novel is.
