Major Pettigrew, a widower, falls in love with the widow who runs a shop in the village. The widow is an English born woman of Pakistani descent and the difference is too much for their relatives, friends and acquaintances. I enjoyed reading about their developing relationship as well as the difficulties Major Pettigrew was having with his grown son, who selfishly pursues his own success.
