It's not often that a book has me cringing, wanting to throw it down in frustration and never to return to it again. Unfortunately, Beautiful Creatures was written so badly and unconvincingly so that's what I would have done, if not for a reading challenge I was trying to complete.
You'd think such an interesting and unique premise about witches and warlocks would be difficult to get wrong. Unfortunately, the book was written in such a bland, boring manner that it failed to grab me at all. Not to mention that some of the writing is just plain bad. It was contradictory, involved one too many broken sentences, and was rather confusing at times, making it a chore to understand what the author is trying to get at.
Unlike most YA books, it is written in the point of view of a teenage male, but the authors trying to put themselves in a teenage boy's shoes mostly involved talking about how hot some cheerleaders were at the school. There's barely any character development and you're just meant to accept that Ethan just falls in love with Lena, because he's been dreaming about her all of this time.
The plot (or lack thereof) just seemed to drag on and on forever. So much so that at the end, I wondered why I bothered wasting my time on reading this book when there are so many other more interesting things to do.
Also at the most crucial moment when the plot is meant to take off, the authors throws us into a random, unimportant, and rather frustrating side track in the form of a surprise party. Who cares about the other school kids when you are meant to be finding out what happens to Lena after ramping this up for the ENTIRE book?
Save yourself the trouble, and skip this title.

I liked the first book , but struggled and could not finish Book #2. Did you hear that they are making this into a film .
I think I'm going to take this one off my To read pile, it doesn't seem like my kind of book. Thanks ladies! :)

I didn't mind some of the story elements, I just thought it was badly constructed/written. That combined with the length was just bad enough.
I've been looking forward to reading this one, but I've seen quite a few low reviews for it...so maybe not.
I thought it was a Awesome series. looking forward to the movie and cant wait for Beautiful Redemption!
I loved the Southern Charm of it all.the "Sisters" made me laugh and reminded me of my own family. Amma reminded me of both my Grandmothers.Coming from a small town myself I knew exactly how Ethan felt(Even though Im old enough myself now to be him mom) I connected easly with the characters.
Lol I think the movie trailer is slightly more interesting cos it's not dry and boring like how its written.
Doesn't matter how it is written it is how good it is. So the boook is a little slow but it's still good.
I wish I had read your review before attempting to read this one. Fortunately, I didn't read too much before I decided to switch to a different book. I'll check out the movie instead.
Ah don't get me wrong, I did like the concept but just did not enjoy the book at all. There were some good parts but you had to wade through the trash to get to it (ie. all that high school drama, the dance, etc.) Let's hope the movie saves the good parts.
I hope so, but that's never boded well for me! (Sat through Water for Elephants knowing what was coming and hated it)
