Diary
by Chuck Palahniuk
by Chuck Palahniuk
What did I think? Well that's something I don't even know the answer to myself. Palahniuk is genius, a man of a million words. This book had a wonderful plot and I couldn't even begin to imagine how he thought up such a story (of course though, I always feel that way when reading one of his novels).
The novel is written as a diary through the eyes of a woman named Misty. Misty is writing the diary for her husband, who after a failed suicide attempt is left in a vegetative state. On the island of Waytansea, she chronicles her everyday life from how she is constantly being told by everyone, especially her mother in law, that she should be painting and creating the works of art they know she can produce, to the calls about the homes her husband ruined. As Misty's story unfolds many strange things begin to happen, and Misty seems to be the only one who wants some answers.
Though overall it was really good, there were times that after reading a bit I would put the book down and have to force myself to pick it up again later. However, when things got going, they didn't stop. The book was enticing enough that as the story unfolded, I myself felt betrayed. I felt angry for the main character, Misty.
The beginning was a bit slow, the middle better, and the ending the most interesting part.
Regardless, I believe that if you are a fan of Palahniuk's work, read it! You won't regret it. And if you've read Haunted, this will seem like a walk in the park!
