While I enjoyed this book it wasn't as compelling as Orlean's previous book The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession.
I wanted to know more about the fortunes of the German Shepherd Dog breed, which is what Orlean wrote about in a recent op/ed piece in the New York Times. But this was really a book about the people including the owner of the orginal Rin Tin Tin, a TV producer, and a lady in Texas who is breeding descendents of Rin Tin Tin. While her research was meticulous, none of them seemed like anyone I would want to meet.
