Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews
Everything Ilona Andrews writes is fabulous, and this short is no exception. Dali is a white tiger shifter who is secretly in love with her Alpha, Jim. When he shows up at her house, magically injured and asking for help, she doesn't hesitate. I love that the Andrews (a husband & wife writing team) use more than just the standard Western European mythology in their books; here we get Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian myths all intertwined into a fabulous story. And the romance is so, so sweet and realistic. I love Dali and Jim, and Dali's mother was fab. This is an excellent introduction to the Kate Daniels series, though Kate herself is only ever mentioned. 5/5 stars

Ice Shards by Yasmine Galenorn
I've not read anything of Ms. Galenorn's Otherworld series, and the first several pages of this story were quite confusing, so I gave up. Did Not Read

Double Hexed by Allyson James
I really enjoy Ms. James' Stormwalker series, and this was a meaty addition. Janet's hotel has suddenly been attacked by a nasty hex that has faucets spouting blood--and not even Fremont can fix them. Stormwalker Janet, her dragon/biker boyfriend Mick, witch and hotel manager Cassandra, the aforementioned Fremont, and Coyote (yes, the god!) are all trapped inside while the hexed hotel brings out the worst in them. This story is quite accessible to those who aren't following the series, though fans will certainly get more from it. There's a lot going on in this 90-page story, and it was quite well done. Plus, Mick is hot. (Yes, I'm shallow!) 4/5 stars

Blood Debt by Jeanne C. Stein
I don't follow this series, so I was a little confused at first, but Ms. Stein does a very good job bringing new readers up to speed. Anna Strong, vampire and bounty hunter, is called to atone for a death she caused at some point previous, and to save the life of a friend's brother. The whole idea of a mystical court of law was really interesting, and I cheered for Anna at the end. Series fans should certainly pick this up, since a romance begins in this short that will likely have an impact on later books. 3.5/5 stars
