Nothing to Envy? I envy Barbara Demick's ability to research and write about such a dystopic topic while making a sympathetic case for each of her characters. She presents strife in a way where situations don't seem so bad and then utterly terrible. Many cases have a tinge of hope and resilience only to show how well this optimistic outlook continues to be destroyed in so many aspects of life from the physical to the mental to the spiritual. Overall, Demick provides an incredibly informative view that helps readers understand the North Korean situation as well as how the system affects its citizens.
