it was amazing

I've had this book on my pile for ages. It is the story of a family of missionaries who travel to Congo just before the war. The father is a fierce reliogious man who dominates his wife and children with the bible and his fist.
I loved the way that this story is told through the voices of each of the children, each having a very different voice and personality. The mother also writes some of the chapters although hers tend to be set in the present looking back at the past, whilst the daughters grow up through their stories not knowing what path lies ahead. This story spans their whole lives.
