Read from December 18, 2011 to January 01, 2012

A book that seems destined to divide its audience. I found it a gripping read that uses the premise of a child being slapped by another parent at a barbeque as a way in to gauge the impact of the consequences on many of the family and friends in attendance. None of the characters is particularly likeable but they are all vividly drawn with each chapter giving a different perspective in taking the story forward. The insight into the diverse middle class Melbourne mores is a fascinating one and ocbviously told with some insight, but there seems to be underlying bitterness in the writing that often leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. I managed to avoid the TV series before reading the book, but now I'm keen to track it down.
