With a little editing, the Weatherman could have been a decent, nuanced novel about capital punishment. There's a reason why the blurb from Stephen King praises the first 40 pages: Thayer sets his book up as quite a thriller, but after that the pace is sub-par. Most of the authorial energy in the middle half of the book is wasted on a forced sequence of porno-style sex scenes that add nothing to the story. They just degrade most of the newsroom characters to the level of the obligatory Christian Hypocrite. Ah, Minnesota, is this the best you can do?
