The final work in the Old Kingdom trilogy, and by far the weakest. Far too much of the action takes place across the wall in Ancelstierre, with much, too much attention given to the details of military action. I found myself skimming paragraphs and then entire pages, and did not miss anything. I read fantasy for the magical and supernatural aspects. The sections of the work that were true fantasy were as good as or better than any in the previous works, and so I can recommend this, but with the caveat that you might find yourself doing the same as I did. The resolution is eminently satisfying in every way.
