it was amazing
bookshelves: science-fiction
Read from December 17, 2011 to January 29, 2012

One of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. The story deals with a "first encounter" situation with alien races and the next dozen years or so, focusing around Tyler Vernon, a man from Vermont who used to draw a comic strip. This unlikely person happens to find something on Earth of great value to the friendly alien race that visits Earth, and is able to leverage that in all sorts of crazy ways to successfully deal with the decidedly unfriendly alien race that also visits earth. There are two things that I liked best about the book. First, it is funny. I mean, really funny. I can not remember the last time a sci-fi book had me laughing out loud as I read it. Hilarious stuff. Second, it takes its science seriously, and lots of cool things are done with asteroids using said science. Who knows if reality would play out the way that the theories do in the book, but it is a nice extrapolation off of what is already know. Highly recommended.
