Jeanette Winterson may be my new favorite author. I've read two of her works this month, and am looking forward to two more as the summer rolls along. She's sly, sardonic, witty, and insightful and enjoys slapstick as much as analysis. Basically lots of fun from a good stylist. This is sort of a buddy story between the title characters, and Ms. Winterson gives them the life it takes to make them likable, and empathetic. I was surprised and touched by their ultimate fates. Ms. Winterson does what's done these days with the re-telling of myths, shifting them in time and space, and taking them seriously, but not too too seriously. It's a fun read, and another of the wornderful Canongate series.

PS: I think Jeanette Winterson would be great company at a dinner party!
