My review isn't entirely valid, since I gave up on the book and returned it with the last lot to the library. Beautifully written, some fantastic metaphors and imagery, engaging plot... But I couldn't do it. I'm going to put it down to the cultural differences, I'm not overly familiar with the Oriental way of living, and as such the characters were so difficult to emotionally invest in that I became bored. I wouldn't recommend it for those (like myself) who find reading pleasurable because they enjoy being empathetic with the characters. I may or may not re-borrow and pick up where I left off somewhere down the track, but for now I can say I found it far too tedious to battle my way through the final one-hundred-or-so pages.
