Sheinkin’s fast-paced nonfiction tells a story many readers think they already know. But his carefully-researched details of who Arnold was and how/why he became a spy expand the tale. Page after page caused me exclamations and the desire to say to someone, “You’ll never believe what I just learned.” It’s amazing the American Revolution succeeded, given the egos of many of its generals, lack of organization, near-misses and lucky breaks. Sheinkin shines a spotlight not only on Arnold, but on the physical and tactical difficulties of fighting that particular war and how it could almost as easily have been the British who conquered.
