Crispin: The Cross of Lead (Crispin #1)
I found this book to be a good read, and a solid selection for a children's book club, especially one with boy members (age range 9-13). It has a well-drawn main character, a mystery-identity driven plot line and fine writing. It also raises interesting and important questions about money, power, identity and freedom; questions that would be great starting points for a book club discussion. Finally, it should be said that the book's historical setting (14th c. medieval England) provides another learning tool. I'd recommend this work over the gold rush one if you're pressed for time and/or looking for a children's book club selection by Avi.
