The world can be so negative and difficult at times for some of my students. I hesitated to read them a book that composed the words "worst" and "Christmas" in the same title. Christmas deserves much more than that and all of us need to cling to the hope that the birth of Christ brings into our lives. But after reading this book to my Kindergartners, it was clear that Christmas deserves laughter and joy as well. So many of my kids have younger siblings and could relate to the frustrations Joy felt when her attempts to celebrate Christmas were ruined by her baby brother Sam. The "stinky baby messing with the tree" made them roar with laughter every time we sang it. Joy comes full circle at the end realizing the blessing of her brother and the ways she can make good on his innocent antics. This will definitely be a book I use again next year at this time.
