A retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl." I bought this with a lot of trepidation. The book Wicked was so horrible that I have lingering yuck at the thought of reading something he has written. I hope I like this, even a little bit. (It was a $4.00 bargain book, so I didn't shell out too much to give him another try).

This has been called an "illumination" of "The Little Match Girl." I have not read it,(if I did as a child I have completely forgotten). I had nothing to compare this to, but liked it. No love here, it is a pretty bleak story that takes place at Christmas time. I gather the original is quite dark. The ending is kind of sweet and things do end better than they started.
