really liked it
Read from December 13 to 14, 2011

Reading this book was like meeting an old friend. I always enjoyed the military SF o Gordon R. Dickson and it had been a while since I had picked up the Dorsai series.

The Dorsai are citizens of a planet that specializes in mercenaries. Unlike the Imperial Sardauka in Dune or the habitants of Harry Harrison's Deathworld, these men were not shaped by a hostile environment but some genetic drift and culture. This use of contracts in this universe is also interesting in how it affects trade, education, science, etc.

The first Dorsai novel is pretty straight ahead as it follows a young Dorsai who leaves home and embarks on his brilliant military career. The telling of it though is quite fun and this is a rather short novel compared to some of the bloated military SF available now.

Will be looking forward to rereading the rest of the series.
