Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke are kids, taking a break from painting the house, when Sam Lesser and his friend, Al Grubb, show up at their house, knocking on the door to see their mom, Nina, and dad, Rendell. Sam and Al have come up to the house to kill Rendell Locke, because Ren has a set of keys to a house in Massachussetts, in a town called Lovecraft.

After Ren is buried, the rest of the family moves to Lovecraft to live in the family home, Keyhouse, with Ren's brother, Duncan.

Of course, there's something...odd...about Keyhouse, and Bode is the first one to realize it when he finds a strange key to a door, and when he goes through the door, his body dies and he turns into a ghost. He also finds a wellhouse, with an echo in the well that talks back to him.

In the meantime, Sam Lesser is incarcerated, and speaking through the water to Echo, who promises him an escape and a way to get back at Ren through his family. Sam manages to break out of juvenile hall to start his cross-country trip to Lovecraft and Keyhouse, leaving a mass of bodies in his wake.

This is a very intriguing story that falls between horror and mystery, and might remind readers of American Gothic or the like. I haven't really connected to any of the characters yet, but will probably pick up the second to see more about the amazing keys of Keyhouse, and what Echo has planned for the family.
