An enjoyable memoir by Dora Saint/Shafe, known for her 'Miss Read' series of novels about rural life, especially Village School.

Derek Crowe's illustrations enhance the text, as always.

It lacks something compared with the novels, but she evidently had a clear idea of what she wanted to convey and does it successfully. She is particularly good when describing the foibles of the adults around her and it is clear that an interest in appearances is not confined to the modern age. The account of returning to her village school in later life was heart warming. There are lots of unfamiliar words used about bygone materials and it reminds me of listening to my grandmother.
