This is definitely the best book I read in 2011 and one I will remember for a long time. Aminata Diallo is such a powerful character, a woman who had to deal with so much in her life but came out with a small victory in the end. Slavery is something we all know about but it's very rare we really think about what the slaves went through, and how they were forced to adopt to a new culture and life separated from their family and homeland.Lawrence Hill did exceptional work on this book.

A lady from Church kept recommending it to me. I kept hearing about it but never thought I'd like it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it:)

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh Hi Rowena, I just had another friend recommend I read this, which led me to your review. Nice one:) Must read.
ps: horrible night for the tricker treaters eh? I felt so bad for the little drowned souls, I gave them more candies than is probably healthy:)

Rowena It is a wonderful book, Florence! I hope you enjoy it. What was nice to was that the writer is Canadian :) I know, poor trick-or-treaters! I didn't see too many people dressed up this year, which was a pity. Did you hear any fireworks in your neighbourhood?

As to Canadian author, that's exactly why she recommended it to me - I really want to pay more attention to our home grown authors...
Crazy amount of fireworks - more fireworks than kids, it was nuts (my dogs were in a panic) I was actually wondering how on earth they were managing to even light them in that downpour! No harm done, my puppies are glad it's over though:)

Rowena Same here, re: Canadian authors. I have Alice Munro to read next.

More fireworks than children, you're right! I was thinking the same thing, very surprised that they got them to light. And poor dogs :( The UK does safety campaigns every year about fireworks and pets, I've yet to see that here.
