it was amazing
bookshelves: britlit, historical, romance, keeper, mental-health, unusual-protagonist
Read from November 21 to December 21, 2011

I think this wins the title of most emotionally intense romance I've ever read.

The author's writing is always excellent but this goes beyond in vivid portrayal of altered perception, emotion, and extreme frustrations of someone who has suffered brain injury. Jervaulx leapt to my shortlist of favorite heros in the way he overcame multiple challenges of health, economic labyrinth, social(as well as literal) straitjacket, and adjustment to newfound feelings for a woman as far distanced from his circle as an Amazon would be.

Should be required reading for anyone whose personal or working life involves someone with brain injury, and for any would-be writer who wants a superb example of ever-escalating stakes and making protagonists suffer so as to deserve their happy ending.
