This book helped me to understand the original meaning of the phrase, coined by St. John of the Cross, and to interpret his and St. Teresa's writings on the subject. I had been quite confused because of the discrepancy between John's writings, which make it appear to be very rare and to happen only under certain circumstances, and the way people use the phrase in the present to mean just about anything unpleasant. May redefines the term to make sense to modern readers but does so within the context of it's original writings by John and Teresa.
