This is one of those books that makes my tags seem ridiculously inadequate. Any book in which a yew tree (and not just any yew tree but the archetypical Green Man spirit) walks in the night and tells stories to a boy is surely a fantasy - and yet this is mostly the tale of an alienated boy dealing (or not dealing) with his mother's deathly illness.
Yew tree as hugely unconventional therapist? Yep! And it works, for the boy AND the reader. I started the book expecting a creepy tale of ancient magic, or perhaps a psychological thriller - but ended the book deeply moved.
